Volunteering job at Gorilla Habituation Project, Gabon

Position Description:
PROGRAM (Protector of the Great Apes of Moukalaba-Doudou) is a gabonese ONG oriented to the habituation of western lowland gorilla for sustainable tourism, seen as a tool for a) the conservation of great apes and b) the development of local communities. There are currently 2 sites where PROGRAM operates; Dougetsi and La Mbani . In Dougetsi there is a group of gorillas –called Group 8- under the habituation process.

So the main activities covered by the volunteer within this framework will be : 

a)To help in the identification, monitoring and habituation of Group 8.

b)Superivising the work of trackers, both in the field and in camp, adding the surplus of motivation needed for this job.

c)Helping out with camp management tasks.

Qualifications/Experience:
1. Biology-Life Sciences-Evolutionary Anthropology.

2. Travelling/working experience within a developing country, and ideally Central Africa.

3. Interest in animal behaviour, conservation and development.

4. Knowledge of french language.

Candidates must show above average physical conditions to be able to live in isolated environments. Dougetsi is 6km from the nearest village, Doussala, and 80 km from Tchibanga (the province capital) so access to commodities such as transport, internet or hot water will be scarce. Candidates must also show strong psychological fitnees in order to deal with stressful situations such as rare confrontations with animals, living under basic conditions, with a rather restricted diet and in a totally different culture.

Salary/funding:
This is a volunteer position so no salary is provided.

Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging):
PROGRAM will contribute up to 800 euro for flight ticket if total period of permanence be completed. PROGRAM will also cover travel expenses from Libreville to Doussala, and lodging in Dougetsi camp, Tchibanga and Libreville. Food and visa expenses will be covered by the volunteer.

Term of Appointment:
9 months, starting 15th august 2014.
